“What you should know.”

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics reports that mushrooms contain about 15 vitamins and minerals, including folate magnesium, potassium, vitamin B6, and zinc. Mushrooms also are low in calories and rich in antioxidants, which can help to lower risk for inflammation. They may also mitigate the risk of developing serious health conditions, such as Alzheimer’s, heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Mushrooms are also a great source of Selenium. Selenium is a trace mineral that we need to get through diet or supplements. This mineral is essential for thyroid health and a working metabolism. Selenium is also a potent antioxidant and may lower oxidative stress, which has been linked to many chronic diseases from type 2 diabetes to some types of cancer.
Additionally, mushrooms contain unique compounds such as beta-glucans, which may also help regulate cholesterol and support heart health, as well as potential anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. Their fiber content also supports gut health, making mushrooms a smart and versatile addition to a balanced diet.
