VO2 Max!

The fitness metric that actually matters”

——-

VO₂ max—short for maximal oxygen uptake—is widely considered the clearest measure of cardiorespiratory fitness, reflecting how efficiently the body delivers and uses oxygen during sustained activity. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, VO₂ max is a gold-standard indicator of aerobic capacity and overall cardiovascular health. Its importance goes well beyond athletic performance. Research published in JAMA Network Open has shown that higher levels of cardiorespiratory fitness are strongly associated with lower risks of cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality, making VO₂ max one of the more meaningful predictors of long-term health. In practical terms, a higher VO₂ max translates into better stamina, faster recovery, and greater resilience during both exercise and everyday activities.

For most people, VO₂ max is now easy to track without a lab test. Devices like the Apple Watch estimate the metric using heart rate and movement data collected during outdoor walks, runs, or hikes. The actual number is stored on your iPhone in the Apple Health app: simply tap Browse, then Heart, then Cardio Fitness to view your VO₂ max along with a fitness classification such as below average or above average. Apple refers to the feature as “Cardio Fitness,” which can make it easy to overlook, but it provides a useful trendline over time. While individual readings may fluctuate, the broader trajectory offers a reliable snapshot of whether your aerobic fitness—and by extension, your long-term health—is improving or declining.
