Electrolytes seem to be having a bit of a moment in the spotlight right now…they’re showing up in drink mixes, sports beverages, wellness podcasts, and social media posts, often accompanied by claims that make them sound like a miracle solution for everything from fatigue to headaches, and everything in between. The thing is, as with many health trends, the truth is a little less dramatic, but definitely still worth paying attention to!
So, Why Electrolytes?
Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electrical charge and help regulate some of the body’s most important functions. The main electrolytes include sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and chloride, and their job is actually pretty straightforward…they help your body maintain fluid balance, support muscle function, and keep your nervous system communicating properly. So, in other words, they’re involved in a lot more than just quenching your thirst!
Most people only think about electrolytes after a tough workout or on a particularly hot day, but if you’ve ever felt drained after sweating heavily, experienced muscle cramps, or dealt with a pounding headache after spending hours in the heat, electrolyte loss may have been part of the reason why you feel the way you do…which is why electrolytes aren’t just for athletes or marathon runners.
Electrolytes For the Win.
Now, while electrolytes may now be a mainstream trend and splashed across every social media influencer’s platform, they actually do help your body move fluids in and out of cells, support healthy muscle contractions, and assist with nerve signaling. Even your heartbeat relies on electrolytes working behind the scenes. As we get older, paying attention to hydration and electrolyte balance can become even more important because many adults don’t drink enough fluids throughout the day, and factors like medications, illness, excessive sweating, or digestive issues can increase the risk of becoming depleted in these essential minerals.
Get To Know Your Electrolytes.
One of the most common misconceptions is that electrolytes only come from brightly colored sports drinks in an array of tropical flavors. In reality, many everyday foods contain these minerals as well! For example, potassium is found in foods like bananas, avocados, sweet potatoes, oranges, tomatoes, and beans. Magnesium can be found in nuts, seeds, leafy greens, and dark chocolate while calcium is available in dairy products, fortified foods, and certain vegetables. Sodium, despite its bad reputation at times, is also an essential electrolyte and is naturally present in many foods..one simple way to add a little sodium to your hydration routine is to put a few flakes of Celtic Sea Salt under your tongue before drinking water. Coconut water is another popular option because it naturally contains several electrolytes like potassium and is refreshing and delicious on its own or mixed with your favorite juice. If you do choose to use some of the popular electrolyte drinks or powders, make sure to check labels for high sugar content or dyes, which can detract from the overall health benefits.
That said, there are situations where additional electrolytes may be helpful, and spending time in hot summer weather is a perfect example. If you’re spending time outdoors, gardening, walking, hiking, or simply trying to survive a heat wave, you’re likely losing more fluids and minerals through sweat than you realize. The same goes for things like intense exercise, travel, and illness.
You Need More Than Just Water!
One thing that’s easy to forget is that electrolytes and water work together. Drinking large amounts of water without replacing lost minerals can sometimes leave people feeling less than their best, particularly after prolonged sweating, because hydration isn’t always just about the water…it’s about making sure your body has the mineral/electrolyte balance it needs to allow that hydration to actually happen. So, while you don’t need to carry around the trending water bottle du jour, understanding what electrolytes do and making sure you’re getting enough through food, fluids, and occasional supplementation when needed can be a simple and super effective way to support your energy, hydration, and overall well-being, especially during these scorching summer months.
