“The 249th anniversary of the United States.”

Was July 2nd the Real Date?
John Adams, a fervent advocate for American independence and Boston’s representative at the First Continental Congress, firmly believed that July 2nd should be celebrated as Independence Day. It was on that date in 1776 that the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence from Great Britain. However, July 4th – the day the Declaration of Independence was formally adopted – ultimately became the official holiday. In quiet protest, Adams reportedly refused to attend July 4th celebrations, holding fast to his belief in the significance of July 2nd.
Ironically, July 4th would take on profound personal meaning for Adams. On that very date in 1826 – the 50th anniversary of the Declaration’s adoption – both he and Thomas Jefferson, another towering figure of the Revolution, died within hours of each other.
With all due respect to Mr. Adams, this year, July 4th carries even greater significance. Beyond commemorating America’s independence – an occasion always worthy of celebration – this Fourth of July marks the beginning of the nation’s 250th anniversary year. The countdown is on, culminating in a historic celebration on July 4, 2026.
