How to “Treat” Your Portfolio this Halloween
October 28, 2025
“Investing in the spooky side.”
——-
When you think of Halloween, you probably picture costumes, candy, pumpkins and haunted houses. But for the entrepreneurial investor (yes, that means you), it’s worth considering the holiday through a broader lens: consumer behavior and market patterns.
U.S. adults are expected to spend around $13.1 billion this year on Halloween, according to the National Retail Federation (NRF) survey. Within that total, candy spending alone is projected at about $3.9 billion, with decoration and costume purchases also hitting multi-billion dollar levels. When everyday consumers are opening their wallets, that suggests opportunities in sectors that service this spending wave.
With that spending surge in mind, one practical way to invest around Halloween is to target publicly traded companies whose business correlates strongly with candy, décor, costumes, or broad retail activity tied to the holiday.
For example, consider:
· The Hershey Company (NYSE: HSY) — often cited as a “Halloween stock” due to its dominant position in candy and seasonal promotions.
· Mondelez International (NASDAQ: MDLZ) — which owns snack and candy brands that roll out Halloween packaging and seasonal flavors.
· Target Corporation (NYSE: TGT) — a retail chain that offers each year’s full complement of Halloween costumes, décor and candy, capturing the broader holiday-shopping lift.
By aligning a portion of your investment lens with companies like Hershey, Mondelez and Target — which benefit from the Halloween spending wave — you’re tapping into the seasonal tailwind rather than chasing obscure thematic plays.
Just some food for thought!
