SpaceX and the Waiting Game

“Why some advisors are telling investors to be patient.”
——-
SpaceX is widely regarded as one of the most innovative companies in the world. Under the leadership of Elon Musk, the company has transformed the commercial space industry, built the world’s largest satellite internet network through Starlink, and continues to push the boundaries of space exploration. Yet despite this impressive track record, many investment advisors are urging caution rather than encouraging investors to rush into the stock. The reason is not a lack of confidence in the company itself. Rather, it is concern over valuation. According to Reuters, some analysts believe recent private-market valuations already assume years of future growth and near-flawless execution, leaving less room for investor error if expectations are not fully met.
Another factor is that highly anticipated offerings often experience significant volatility once broader investors gain access. Financial publications including Barron’s and MarketWatch have noted that even exceptional companies can struggle to justify lofty valuations in their early years as public investments. Advisors frequently distinguish between a great company and a great investment at a particular price. SpaceX continues to invest heavily in projects such as Starship while expanding Starlink globally, creating tremendous long-term potential but also substantial execution risk. For many long-term investors, the question is not whether SpaceX can succeed, but whether the current valuation already reflects much of that future success. As a result, some advisors advocate a measured approach: establish a modest position if desired, then wait for additional financial data and market pricing before committing significant capital.
