The Great Experience Gap

“Why experience may become the most undervalued business asset of the AI era.”

——-

Artificial intelligence has dramatically lowered the cost of starting and running a business. Today, a solo entrepreneur can use AI to write marketing copy, analyze competitors, summarize research, answer customer questions, and automate routine administrative tasks in minutes. Those are remarkable productivity gains, but they do not replace sound judgment. As computer scientist and AI pioneer Fei-Fei Li has observed, “Artificial intelligence is not a substitute for human intelligence; it is a tool to amplify human creativity and ingenuity.” The entrepreneurs most likely to benefit from AI are not necessarily the youngest or the most technologically savvy—they are those who have spent decades learning how to make good decisions when the answers are not obvious.

That creates what might be called the “great experience gap.” According to the landmark study “Age and High-Growth Entrepreneurship” by researchers Pierre Azoulay, Benjamin F. Jones, J. Daniel Kim, and Javier Miranda, published by the National Bureau of Economic Research, the average age of founders of the fastest-growing new companies is 45, and entrepreneurs in their 50s are significantly more likely to build successful businesses than those in their 20s. The researchers found that prior industry knowledge, professional networks, and accumulated experience consistently improve the odds of entrepreneurial success. While AI can rapidly generate information, it cannot replicate decades of firsthand experience negotiating contracts, managing people, earning customer trust, or navigating economic downturns.

For entrepreneurs over 50, that should be encouraging news. AI can help level the technological playing field, but experience remains a competitive advantage that cannot be downloaded or automated. Every success, setback, and lesson learned becomes part of a decision-making framework that improves with time. Technology may help you move faster, but wisdom helps you move in the right direction. In the AI era, the entrepreneurs who combine modern tools with years of practical experience may discover that their greatest business asset has been with them all along.
