The Power of Focus in an Age of Distraction

“A timeless lesson for entrepreneurs.”

——-

As we move into the second half of the year, June is an ideal time for entrepreneurs to pause, assess, and refocus. New Year’s resolutions have either become habits or faded away, and the daily demands of business can easily pull our attention in a dozen different directions. That’s why I recently revisited The Power of Focus, first published in 2000 by Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, and Les Hewitt. More than two decades later, its message remains remarkably relevant: success is often less about doing more and more about concentrating on what matters most.

One of my favorite observations from the book is, “Entrepreneurs are famous for getting distracted and losing their focus. Remember, you don’t need to be involved with every new idea—just focusing on one or two can make you happy and wealthy.” In today’s world of constant notifications, artificial intelligence, social media, and endless opportunities, that advice may be even more valuable than when it was first written. The authors also remind readers that “Life doesn’t just happen to you. It’s all about choices and how you respond to every situation.” Every entrepreneur faces setbacks, but our daily decisions ultimately shape the direction of our businesses and our lives.

Another quote that has stayed with me over the years is, “There are two things that make you wiser, the books you read and the people that you meet.” Successful entrepreneurs never stop learning, and they understand the importance of surrounding themselves with thoughtful, capable people. The Power of Focus offers a practical roadmap for identifying strengths, clarifying goals, and building a life around what matters most. I rarely keep paperback books after reading them, preferring to pass them along to others, but this is one that remains on my shelf. If you haven’t read it, or if it’s been years since you last opened it, June may be the perfect time to revisit this timeless classic.
