The Power of the Peach!

“A sweet summer fruit with surprisingly impressive health benefits.”

——-

Peaches are one of summer’s simplest pleasures, but they also deliver an impressive nutritional punch. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, one medium peach contains about 60 calories, roughly 2 grams of fiber, and provides vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium, and a variety of beneficial plant compounds. That combination supports immune function, healthy digestion, and normal blood pressure while satisfying a sweet tooth with relatively few calories.

Much of a peach’s nutritional value is found just beneath—and within—the skin. Peaches are rich in polyphenols and carotenoids, naturally occurring antioxidants that help protect cells from oxidative stress. Laboratory studies have shown that certain compounds in peaches can inhibit the growth of some cancer cells under experimental conditions, but these findings have not been shown to prevent or treat cancer in people. According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, the strongest evidence continues to support eating a wide variety of fruits and vegetables as part of an overall healthy diet rather than relying on any single “superfood.”

The best news is that peaches are as versatile as they are nutritious. Enjoy them fresh, sliced over oatmeal or yogurt, blended into smoothies, or tossed into summer salads. Whenever possible, eat the peel after washing the fruit thoroughly, since that’s where many of the beneficial antioxidants are concentrated. Sweet, refreshing, and packed with nutrients, peaches are an easy way to add a little more flavor—and a little more health—to your summer menu.
