Could Wegovy Help US Live Longer?

For millions of people, drugs such as Wegovy and Ozempic have become familiar names because of their effectiveness in treating obesity and diabetes. But researchers are now asking a much bigger question: Could these drugs also influence the aging process itself? A new study published September 2 in Nature, supported by the National Institutes of Health, found that semaglutide—the active ingredient in Wegovy and Ozempic—extended lifespan and improved several measures of health in older female mice. According to the NIH, mice receiving semaglutide had a median lifespan nearly 100 days longer than untreated mice, while also showing improvements in muscle function, cognition, and glucose regulation.
Perhaps even more interesting was what researchers saw happening beneath the surface. According to the Nature study, semaglutide reduced several biological characteristics associated with aging, including chronic inflammation, cellular senescence and mitochondrial dysfunction, while improving markers related to stem-cell function and genomic stability. Researchers also compared semaglutide with calorie restriction—one of the most extensively studied interventions for extending lifespan in laboratory animals—and found that the drug reproduced many of its beneficial effects. Yet some improvements, including measures of spatial memory and glucose control, went beyond those produced by matched calorie restriction. NIH researcher Dr. Rafael de Cabo put the broader possibility this way: “Most chronic diseases are deeply rooted in the aging process.” If GLP-1 drugs eventually prove capable of affecting that underlying process, he noted, their seemingly wide-ranging health benefits might have a common explanation.
There is, however, an enormous difference between helping mice live longer and doing the same for people. The researchers themselves emphasize that we do not yet know whether semaglutide slows aging or extends lifespan in humans, and long-term clinical studies will be required to answer that question. What makes this research fascinating is the direction in which the science is moving. GLP-1 drugs began primarily as diabetes treatments, became enormously important in weight management, and are now being investigated for broader effects on age-related health. That does not make Wegovy a longevity drug—but it does make the possibility worth watching.
The Takeaway: We are nowhere near being able to say that taking Wegovy will make us live longer. But this new research suggests that scientists may be uncovering something more fundamental about GLP-1 drugs than weight loss alone. If future human studies confirm even part of what researchers are seeing in animals, the longevity conversation surrounding these medications could become every bit as important as the weight-loss story that made them famous.
