September is Healthy Aging Month!

“A reminder to embrace vitality, independence & purpose.”

——-

September has quietly earned its place on the calendar as Healthy Aging Month, an observance designed to highlight the positive aspects of growing older.

What began more than 25 years ago by Healthy Aging® Magazine and its editor Carolyn Worthington has grown into a national movement encouraging people – particularly those of us 45 and beyond – to embrace lifestyle changes that lead to vitality, independence, and renewed purpose. It’s not about denying age but about redefining it, shifting the conversation from decline to opportunity.

This month is supported by a wide circle of organizations.

Federal health agencies like the CDC, and the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion recognize Healthy Aging Month as part of their broader National Health Observances. The VA Medical Centers also use this time to reach veterans with tools for healthier living. Even the Trust for America’s Health has stepped in, underlining the importance of smart public health policies to support our aging population. What started as a media initiative now has deep roots across the national health landscape.

Recognition doesn’t stop at the national level.

State health departments – from Nebraska to Michigan – roll out their own campaigns in September, while community hospitals, senior centers, and local wellness groups host events ranging from screenings to fitness classes. Nonprofits like the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America link Healthy Aging Month to brain health awareness, reminding us that staying sharp is just as important as staying fit. It’s a diverse coalition, all working toward the same goal: to help people grow older with energy, confidence, and connection.

At its heart, Healthy Aging Month is about personal empowerment.

It’s an invitation to make small but intentional choices – whether scheduling that overdue checkup, walking a little more each day, or finally tackling that new hobby. The message is clear: the second half of life can be just as dynamic and rewarding as the first. September gives us the perfect excuse to pause, reflect, and take action toward that goal.

Let September serve as your reset button. Whether for yourself, a client, or a family member, consider making this the month you lean into new habits and embrace the opportunities that come with healthy aging.
