$12 Dollar Super Bowl Tickets?

“January 15, 1967.”

——-

The American football season is about to culminate in the 60th Super Bowl — and the contrast between then and now could not be more striking. It may surprise many fans to learn that the very first Super Bowl wasn’t even a sellout. What began as a championship experiment has evolved into one of the most powerful commercial and cultural events in global sports.

Bart Starr vs. Len Dawson — and $12 Tickets

The inaugural Super Bowl, later known as Super Bowl I, was played at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on January 15, 1967, where the Green Bay Packers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 35–10. The matchup featured two elite quarterbacks of the era — Bart Starr versus Len Dawson — with Starr, the NFL’s league-wide MVP that season, earning the first of his two consecutive Super Bowl MVP awards. The average ticket price was just $12, and perhaps most astonishing by today’s standards, the stadium still had empty seats. The first four Super Bowls, played before the NFL–AFL merger, were evenly split, with each league winning two titles.
