Backgammon: A 5,000-Year Game Still Rolling Strong

“One of world’s oldest games.”

——-

Born in ancient Mesopotamia and refined over centuries from Persia to Rome to Europe, backgammon is one of the world’s oldest board games. Its mix of luck, skill, and strategy has kept players hooked for millennia—whether in royal courts, smoky cafés, or modern tournaments.

The Game & Rules

Backgammon is basically a race – just with dice, strategy, and the occasional dash of luck to keep it interesting. You and your opponent each get 15 checkers, and the goal is to move them all the way around the board and off before your opponent does. The roll of two dice determines how far your pieces can go, but you’ll quickly realize it’s not just about moving forward – it’s about blocking, trapping, and sometimes sending your opponent’s checkers back to start. That’s where the “back” in backgammon comes from.

The board is divided into four quadrants with 24 points, and the two of you move in opposite directions. If you land on a spot with only one of your opponent’s checkers, you “hit” it – sending it to the bar in the middle of the board, where it has to re-enter from the beginning of your opponent’s route. This is where the game gets sneaky. A good player knows when to play aggressive and when to play safe, reading the board like a chess match but always with the wild card of the dice roll.

Once all your checkers are in your home board, you start “bearing off,” which just means removing them based on your dice rolls. First to clear all their checkers wins – and the beauty is, even if you’re behind, a couple of lucky rolls can turn the whole game around. That mix of skill and luck keeps it fun, unpredictable, and just competitive enough to make you want to play again (and again).
