The Origins of Trick or Treat

“Why our messages don’t always mean what we intend.”

——-

Every Halloween, millions of children knock on doors shouting “Trick or treat!” But where did this familiar phrase originate? Its roots stretch back to medieval Europe, where a tradition called “souling” involved people going door-to-door requesting food in exchange for prayers for the dead. In Scotland and Ireland, another custom known as “guising” involved dressing in costumes and performing songs, jokes, or tricks in exchange for treats. European immigrants eventually brought variations of these traditions to North America, where Halloween mischief gradually evolved into today’s candy-filled celebrations. According to Merriam-Webster, a Canadian newspaper referenced Halloween “treats” and “tricks” together in 1923, while the expression “trick or treat” appeared in print by 1927. What began as a mixture of folklore, superstition, and occasional mischief has become one of Halloween’s most beloved traditions. Fortunately for today’s homeowners, a handful of candy usually keeps the tricks away!

The Takeaway:  What started centuries ago as a combination of superstition, mischief, and tradition has become a celebration of community and childhood fun. Sometimes a little candy is all it takes to keep everyone happy!
