Better Travel with Your Dog

“Bring your best friend along for the adventure.”

——-

More Americans than ever are taking their dogs on vacation. According to an AAA/Kurgo survey, 56% of dog owners drove with their dog at least once a month during the previous year, reflecting the growing popularity of pet-friendly travel. As hotels, restaurants, parks, and attractions continue to welcome four-legged guests, traveling with your dog has become easier than ever—but a little planning goes a long way.

Before you leave, secure your dog in a properly sized crate or a crash-tested travel harness for safety. Bring copies of vaccination records, pack your dog’s regular food, medications, favorite toys, waste bags, and plenty of fresh water, as unfamiliar water can upset some dogs’ stomachs. If it’s your dog’s first trip, start with a weekend getaway before attempting a longer vacation.

Reserve pet-friendly accommodations in advance and check their policies, as many charge pet fees or require dogs to be crated when left alone. Look for restaurants with outdoor seating, and be sure to give your dog plenty of exercise each day. A tired dog is usually a calmer, quieter travel companion—helping ensure the trip is enjoyable for both of you.
